Welcome to AbsoLUTEly Business

Welcome to this edition of the Pacific Lutheran University School of Business magazine—we hope you have noticed a difference!

The change in our publication is one of many innovative changes underway in the School of Business at Pacific Lutheran University. This edition of AbsoLUTEly Business is a fresh remake of the former Business Scene publication. We hope you enjoy the new style and format.

Retired U.S. Army four-star Gen. Colin Powell remarked, “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception; it is a prevailing attitude.” We agree. Inspired by the AACSB goals for “quality improvement in management education through engagement, innovation and impact,” the School of Business has been transforming.

Dean Nancy Albers-Miller, Ph.D.

Our drive for excellence is reflected in our new mission statement:

The PLU School of Business is a community of engaged faculty, staff and administrators who provide an excellent business education in a student-centered learning environment grounded in the liberal arts that inspires students to: LEARN for life, LIVE purposefully, LEAD responsibly and CARE for others.

Not surprisingly, learning is central to our mission and is captured in “learn for life.” The School of Business has introduced many innovative curricular changes during the past 18 months. Our degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels are being modernized for higher levels of impact and engagement. Part of the curricular revisions has resulted in the introduction of an industry-driven Master of Science in Marketing Research.

LEARN for life, LIVE purposefully, LEAD responsibly and CARE for others.

We also recognize that learning does not stop at graduation. We aspire for our students and alumni to “live purposefully” and “lead responsibly.” We provide a unique and transformative experience that shifts our students from the classroom to career preparation. Our strong connections to the global business community ensure that PLU Business education remains relevant and dynamic. This prepares students with fresh solutions to counter new challenges. The curriculum, which is current, fast-paced, hands-on and rigorous, is embedded in diverse, cross-disciplinary learning in the liberal arts tradition. Our students graduate prepared to continue living purposefully and leading responsibly.

Finally, our mission embraces “care for others.” Today’s corporate world requires professionals, with the hearts and souls of entrepreneurs, to be accountable to society. Organizations are facing new challenges in maintaining green and sustainable places and practices, as well as adapting to innovation, varying demands and disruptive change. Business education at PLU prepares our students for this world.

These are exciting times. Thank you for being here with us,

Nancy Albers-Miller
